transforming plastic waste is fun

Inspiring Change Through Educational Recycling Workshops in Belize and Guatemala

In May 2023, In Mocean had the privilege of hosting educational recycling workshops in Belize City and Guatemala City in collaboration with the German Embassy in Guatemala. These workshops were part of the "EU & You" Event in Belize and the "Festival Cultural Paseo de la Sexta" in Guatemala. Here's how we turned these events into opportunities to educate, inspire, and enable individuals to rethink their relationship with plastic waste.

How Our Educational Recycling Workshops Are Set Up

Our educational recycling workshops are designed to immerse participants in the recycling process by letting them actively use the machines themselves. Each station gives hands-on experience, making the journey from waste to new products both engaging and inspiring.

1. Identify and Sort Plastic

Participants learn to recognize different types of plastic (HDPE, LDPE, and PP) and understand why sorting is key to effective recycling. Using a plastic identification tool called PlasTell, they test various plastic samples, putting their newfound knowledge into practice.

2. Shred Plastic Waste

A mobile shredder brings the recycling process to life. Participants feed bottle caps into the machine and watch as colorful plastic shreds emerge on the other side. Operating the shredder makes the process exciting and memorable.

3. Create New Products

At this station, participants transform plastic shreds into new items themselves. Using a mobile extruder, they fill the machine with shredded plastic, crank the handle, and open the mold to reveal freshly recycled products like carabiner hooks or turtle-shaped keyrings. The hands-on experience of crafting these items is a crow favorite and sparks excitement and curiosity.

Additionally, we set up a learning area highlighting the long decomposition timelines of single-use plastics and shared practical tips for adopting sustainable alternatives. We emphasized that recycling is just one part of the solution and reducing plastic usage is critical to addressing the root causes of pollution.

A Roadtrip to Remember

Reaching Belize City and Guatemala City from Marina Chiapas (Mexico), wasn’t just a logistical journey; it was an adventure. Choosing to travel by land over air allowed us to reduce our carbon footprint, support local economies, and connect with communities along the way. Despite the challenges of transporting two large boxes of recycling equipment, the effort was well worth it to deliver an impactful experience and to make our journey as ecologically friendly as possible.

Belize City: Caribbean Vibes and Big Impacts

At the “EU & You” Event in Belize City, the Caribbean charm set the stage for a positive and inspiring day. Visitors were amazed at how accessible small-scale recycling could be, with many expressing frustration at the lack of waste management infrastructure in their country.

Our booth became a hub of curiosity and inspiration. Many left with new ideas for tackling plastic waste in their own communities, excited by the economic and environmental potential of recycling.

Guatemala City: Educating the Next Generation

At the “Festival Cultural Paseo de la Sexta” in Guatemala City, our focus shifted to school groups. Adapting our approach, we led larger group presentations, ensuring students had the chance to interact with the equipment and processes.

Hands-on learning remained a priority. Volunteers demonstrated each recycling step, creating memorable experiences that resonated with the young audience. Seeing students light up as they turned plastic waste into functional products reminded us why these workshops are so important.

Sparking New Ideas and Possibilities

Throughout both hands-on up-cycling events, we encountered individuals eager to learn more about small-scale recycling as a potential business opportunity. Questions about equipment costs and setup showed us that the economic potential of recycling resonated deeply with participants.

We directed them to the resources available on Precious Plastic, where they can find detailed guides, plans for building machines, and connections to a global recycling community.

A Partnership for Sustainability

We owe a huge thanks to the German Embassy in Guatemala for choosing In Mocean as their partner for these impactful events. Their support was instrumental in making our workshops at the “EU & You” event in Belize City and the “Festival Cultural Paseo de la Sexta” in Guatemala City a success.

The embassy’s team went above and beyond, assisting us at the booth and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. Their commitment to creating meaningful experiences was evident in every aspect of the collaboration. Together, we inspired countless individuals to rethink plastic waste and explore sustainable solutions.

We thoroughly enjoyed working with the embassy and are grateful for the opportunity to join forces in promoting sustainability. Here’s to crossing wakes again in the future, creating even more waves of positive change together!
