It is 2.30am in the morning and the volunteers are coming back from their night patrol. They walked five kilometers along the wide beach of Rio Oro to look for fresh turtle nests and hatchlings.

For a long time, the beaches of the Las Perlas archipelago were closed due to Covid-19. Since a while now, it is possible to visit the islands again and we finally get the chance to engage with the local communities.

Joana is rocking gently on her anchor chain. The sun is already up for a couple of hours and I can smell the scent of freshly brewed coffee from the galley. Soon it will be hot in the aft cabin, so I turn around one more time to enjoy the last coolish minutes of the day.
